Specifying the wrong certification for a commercial lighting project can result in failed inspections, rejected rebate applications, or liability issues. This guide breaks down the four most important certifications for LED lighting in North America.
1. ETL Listed
ETL is a product safety certification issued by Intertek, one of OSHA's Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs). ETL Listed products have been tested to the same UL standards and are legally equivalent to UL Listed products for code compliance purposes.
- Accepted by: All US and Canadian electrical inspectors
- Required for: Most commercial and municipal projects in North America
- Key benefit: Widely accepted, often faster to obtain than UL
2. UL Listed
UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is the most recognized safety certification in North America. UL Listed products have been independently tested and certified to meet applicable safety standards.
- Accepted by: All US and Canadian jurisdictions
- Required for: Many government, healthcare, and institutional projects
- Key benefit: Highest brand recognition among inspectors and specifiers
3. DLC (DesignLights Consortium)
DLC is not a safety certification — it's an energy efficiency qualification program. DLC Listed products meet minimum efficacy and performance thresholds, making them eligible for utility rebate programs across the US and Canada.

4. CE Marking
